Moving to a new city alone!

I have decided to make this move without all the safety nets usually with a move such as friends and/or family. I am finding it difficult to know the better areas to live and the local job opportunities...I am single, have two dogs and housing is hard to find as well...Any advice from SD residents would be greatly appreciated...Thanks
